Howdy folks! Wanted to write a post on this as I was looking into voice recognition recently and did not actually realise online transcription services are available.

Transcription services are those that hire people in order to convert audio recordings into written documents. A lot of professionals and institutions require transcription services because it provides a better way to organize and get access to their audio recordings. Transcription services were an in-demand business before until one day audio transcription software was created.

Audio transcription or text-to-speech software is another way to get an audio recording be converted into a written document by automatically transcribing each word as the audio is being played. It is in fact, the fastest and cheapest method to transcribe an audio into the written document. Does that threaten the transcription service industry? No.

People fear, especially those that works in audio transcription industries, that they will be replaced with software that is not only cheap, but works faster than what humans can. However, time proved that services that were done by humans are always better.

Because the first audio transcription software was developed since 1952, and since then, even with the recent developments in transcription technology, it was never in par with audio transcription services. It lacks accuracy needed for important applications. Voice recognition software cannot recognize medical, scientific, business, and other terms not usually used by common people. The only advantage I know audio translation software can help is to help automate calls.

No computer program at the moment is able to compete with linguistic abilities of an average person. Professional transcriptionists are well-versed in audio transcription services not only because they were trained to do so, but also with the experience they gained and new things they learned during the time they perform such services.

Why transcription services are better

Get the exact format you want. Transcribers do businesses in several industries, and most of these industries has specific instructions to follow. But what if a certain industry requires a special format for that written document? Humans can be well instructed to perform special tasks.

Accuracy. Audio transcription software may be fast, but not accurate. Not all audio recordings have the best quality, and not all speakers have the same accent or dictation of a word. Humans are more capable to understand the variations in audio recordings, thus providing a more accurate output than what a software can.

Speed. Speed and accuracy is important to get things done. A software may have the speed, but it lacks accuracy. Transcription services work as humanly as possible, thus providing a more human-readable output than what a software can.

Cost. Although most human services a bit expensive than software, most that tried a software gets back to using human transcription because it does not give them what they want.

There will come a time that audio transcription software can outperform professional transcriptionists, but this is not that time. Human transcriptionists still provides the most accurate and cost-effective services you can use either for medical, legal, or for other transcription purposes.
